Liberec offers fantastic opportunities for a weekend getaway. Whether you are visiting as a couple, with family or friends, in two to three days you can experience the best this city and its surroundings have to offer. Here is our tried-and-tested plan for an unforgettable weekend in Liberec.

Friday Evening – Arrival and First Impressions

Getting to Liberec is easy – about one hour by car from Prague, or 90 minutes by bus from Černý Most. After arriving and checking in to your apartment, we recommend an evening stroll around Dr. E. Beneše Square with its impressive neo-Renaissance town hall from 1893. The city center is compact, well-lit and safe even in the evening. For dinner, try Radniční sklípek right on the square for traditional Czech cuisine, or Pivovar Liberec for craft beer and grilled specialties.

If you arrive while it is still light, stop for a short walk around Šaldovo Square and peek inside the F. X. Šalda Theater – the building itself is worth admiring. For an evening drink, we recommend one of the bars on the square where you can watch the city's atmosphere from the terrace.

Saturday – Ještěd, ZOO and the City

Morning: Head to Ještěd (1,012 m) – the symbol of Liberec and one of the most beautiful buildings in the Czech Republic. Take the cable car from Horní Hanychov (5-minute ride) or drive. The TV tower designed by Karel Hubáček won the prestigious 1969 Perret Prize for architecture. At the summit, enjoy coffee in the restaurant with 360° panoramic views – on clear days you can see the Giant Mountains, Jizera Mountains and Poland.

Tip: Arrive at Ještěd early morning (before 10:00) – you will avoid cable car queues and enjoy clearer views. If you are active, consider hiking up via the blue trail from Horní Hanychov (about 1.5 hours) and taking the cable car down.

Afternoon: Visit Liberec ZOO, one of the most beautiful in the Czech Republic. The stars are the white tigers – Liberec is one of the few places in Europe where you can see them. You will also find a tropical pavilion, penguins, elephants and DinoPark for children. Allow 2–3 hours.

After the ZOO, stop by the Botanical Garden next door – tropical greenhouses with exotic plants are a pleasant addition. Entry is low and the visit takes about 30–45 minutes.

Evening: Treat yourself to dinner at one of the square restaurants – Černá Perla for fine dining, U Krbu for international cuisine. For nightlife, visit [Warehouse Liberec](https://warehouse-liberec.cz/klub-liberec) – a popular club with quality music.

Sunday – Babylon Center and City Walk

Morning: Spend time at Babylon Center – waterpark with slides, wild river and kids pool is perfect for relaxation. In the same complex, explore iQLANDIA – an interactive science center where both kids and adults can try hundreds of experiments. Allow 3–4 hours for both.

Afternoon: Walk through the city center – visit the Regional Gallery, Botanical Garden with tropical greenhouses, or catch a performance at F. X. Šalda Theater. Before leaving, grab coffee at Café Pošta – a stylish cafe in the center.

If you have time, stop by the North Bohemian Museum – one of the oldest museums in the Czech Republic with regional history and natural science exhibitions. Or take a walk around Harcov Reservoir – the peaceful loop around the lake takes about 45 minutes and is a pleasant end to your stay.

Alternative Program: Jizera Mountains

If you are a nature lover, swap Sunday's Babylon for a trip to the Jizera Mountains. From Liberec, Bedřichov is 20 minutes by car. Beautiful marked trails suitable for families start there:

  • Loop around Josefodol Reservoir – easy trail, about 2 hours
  • Path to Královka – moderate trail with views, about 3 hours
  • In winter: Jizerská magistrála – legendary cross-country ski route

Practical Information

Getting there: 1 hour from Prague by car (D10 + R35) or 1.5 hours by bus. City buses cost 27 CZK per ticket. The center is compact – most attractions are walkable.

Weather: Liberec sits at 370 m altitude, typically 2–3 °C cooler than Prague. On Ještěd, expect another 5–8 °C drop. Pack a jacket even in summer.

Dining: The center has many restaurants and cafes. With an apartment kitchen, shop at Albert or Billa supermarkets (both in center). Saturday morning farmers market on the square. Lunch menus in restaurants (11:00–14:00) from 150 CZK.

Best time: Summer for ZOO and hiking, winter for skiing and aquapark, spring/autumn for quiet and lower prices.

Budget: A weekend in Liberec costs significantly less than Prague. Apartment accommodation from 1,500 CZK/night, restaurants 200–400 CZK per main course, attraction entry 100–300 CZK.
