Ještěd – Symbol of Liberec and Architectural Masterpiece of World Significance

Ještěd (1,012 m above sea level) is the highest peak of the Ještěd-Kozákov Ridge and undoubtedly the most famous landmark of Liberec. At its summit stands the iconic TV tower with hotel and restaurant, considered the most significant Czech building of the 20th century and an architectural gem of world stature. Over 300,000 people from around the world visit Ještěd annually.

History and Architecture of the Tower

Karel Hubáček and the Perret Prize The tower on Ještěd was designed by architect **Karel Hubáček** and completed in **1973**. Its hyperboloid shape perfectly blends with the conical mountain peak – as if the mountain and building form one entity. For this revolutionary design, Hubáček received the **1969 Perret Prize**, the most prestigious international architecture award given by the International Union of Architects (UIA).

The tower uniquely combines three functions:

  • Telecommunications transmitter – still active today
  • Hotel – exclusive accommodation directly in the tower (limited rooms)
  • Restaurant – dining room with panoramic views

In 2006, the tower was declared a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It is also regularly rated as one of the most beautiful transmitters in the world.

Practical Tips for Visiting Ještěd

  • Clothing: Typically 5–8 °C cooler at the summit than in the city. Even in summer, bring a jacket, sweater and long pants. In winter, expect frost and strong winds.
  • Photography: Best light for photos is in the morning at sunrise and evening at sunset. Ještěd is one of the most photogenic places in the Czech Republic – bring a tripod for night shots.
  • Timing: Far fewer crowds outside weekends and holidays. Mornings (before 10:00) are quietest.
  • With kids: The cable car ride itself is an experience. Walking space at the summit. For younger children (under 6), we recommend the cable car both up and down.
  • Cable car and weather: The cable car does not run in strong winds and storms. Check operations online before visiting.
  • Food and drink: Besides the tower restaurant, there is a buffet at the bottom station. Bring your own water and snacks for hiking trails.
